It was April of 2019, at the Wyoming Open, where multiple Mosconi Cup players watched and played with the 9 year old protegy, Jin Powell, that evening. Jin was ecstatic as these were also his favorite professional players: Shane Van Boening, Billy Thorpe, Sky Woodward, and Tyler Styer. And at the 2019 BEF Nationals, where top professional player, Sky Woodward, and his family were routing him on.
Jin may be young, but already has thousands of practice hours behind him. His father, Jay, works with him intensely on his game. Jin’s practice routine consists of many drills throughout the week with tournaments on the weekend. In his 1st year alone, he put in over 1000 hours in 10 months! Jin’s demeanor is not your typical 9 year old, as he is wanting to earn the respect as a competitor, not a child. Despite the pictures, Jin does not go to tournaments to collect trophies and always wants to bump up to the next challenging bracket, hence the 18 and under and 20 and under among adult tournaments.
Jin is also a model student earning a nomination for the Denver Asian Education Advisory Council (AEAC) for academics and leadership along being invited to participate in the STEM program at the University of Denver (DU).
Check out Jin’s YouTube Channel, “JinPowell”. Jin was also featured on NBC first locally in Denver then was circulated around the country in several major cities throughout NBC’s network.
His next big tournament will be the Billiards Expo 9-Ball Tournament in March 2020, where he will be competing with the adults.
