The inaugural Hanoi Open Pool Championship kicked off with a bang at the Hanoi Indoor Games Gymnasium – broadcast exclusively across Asia through Vietcontent – as local hero Ngô Quang Trung defeated 2017 World Champion Carlo Biado.

‘Black Tiger’ Biado, the 2019 US Open Pool Championship winner, held an 8-5 lead in a race to 9 against the Vietnamese shooter, but roared on by the Hanoi crowd, Ngô would win the final four racks to record a famous victory – relegating Biado to the one-loss side of the bracket.

The first-ever multi-table Matchroom major event in Asia is a celebration of pool across the continent, with day one’s streaming coverage featuring Asian players in every match. Vietnam star Nguyen Ahn Tuan – who opened the tournament in a ceremonial lag with WNT #1 and current World Champion Francisco Sanchez Ruiz, made his way into Thursday’s Winners’ Qualification with wins over Khâu Quốc Tiệp and JJ Faul.

Fedor Gorst – flying under the flag of the United States following confirmation of his change in representation ahead of the 30th Anniversary Mosconi Cup at Alexandra Palace, London, has been a hit with Vietnamese fans, demonstrated through his reception in winning the Peri Open WNT Ranking Event on Monday evening. ‘The Ghost’ Gorst received a bye in the first round, then beating Filipino Marvin Asis to book his place in Thursday’s action.

Shane Van Boening and Albin Ouschan will both return on Thursday, with SVB defeating Lee Kun Fang of Chinese Taipei – watched by a sizeable crowd as play closed out on Tuesday’s action. 2016 World Champion Ouschan looked down-and-out in his first match, with Singapore’s Darren Young making two mistakes on the hill to allow the Austrian in and survive an early scare hill-hill.

Team Europe’s latest Mosconi Cup addition, Spaniard David Alcaide, was a 9-4 victor against the Philippines’ Jefrey Roda on table two – streamed exclusively on Matchroom Multi Sport’s YouTube throughout the opening four days of the tournament.

The final Mosconi Cup qualification places will be confirmed following the completion of the Hanoi Open Pool Championship, with less than $6,000 WNT Ranking points splitting Jayson Shaw, Mario He, Moritz Neuhausen and Aleksa Pecelj – the latter two progressing through the opening day’s play to reach Winners’ Qualification.

The Philippines’ World Cup of Pool champions James Aranas and Johann Chua returned to World Nineball Tour action with victories in both early rounds. Fellow Filipino Kyle Amoroto finalised day one’s action on Table One – live on Matchroom.Live and Matchroom Pool’s YouTube – with a comeback victory from four racks down to beat Vietnam’s Luong Duc Thien 9-7.
